Prairie Cinema Supply was born out of a desire to further the capabilities of the Manitoba film industry. Manitoba has become a hidden gem in the filmmaking world - its tax credit, established infrastructure, crew, and cooperation of government and public make it a great place to make movies.
Over the past decade the industry has grown in leaps from "a whole lot of Hallmarks" - Smart producers started looking at Winnipeg as a place to make a safe bet. We started seeing a new types of projects come up: new directors, new scriptwriters, actors breaking typecasts. Winnipeg became a place to bring projects that were unique, and maybe a bit of a risk, because shooting here was less expensive, the tax credit generous, and you could do things like block streets and parks while not attracting attention.
We begun to push the bar - more stunts, bigger sets, bigger stars.
The industry is facing new challenges, and Manitoba is primed to be a hotbed for filming. To be ready, we need to break the status quo and face these challenges with innovation and embrace growth. Manitoba will always be inexpensive to film - but there is a big difference between "inexpensive" and "cheap". Manitoba has now matured from a small film market to a major filming center, and we lack some key resources that should be available.
Others have heard the call: Big Sky Studios opening up seeing the need for a large studio facility, Cinelease opening operations here, RAW camera opening up a shop.
Prairie Cinema Supply saw a need for additional equipment - to fill the gaps in the market to fully supply films domestically - end the practice of constantly having to bring in out of province equipment and technicians and continue to grow Manitoba, for Manitobans, by Manitobans.
We kicked off by establishing Manitoba's first Camera Arm Car, followed up by becoming Manitoba's first rigging supplier for studios. And we will continue to grow and innovate, break status quo and be looking ahead to anticipate the needs of shows in development.
We can do this, all together Manitoba.
Our Mission:
